First Things First: The Setup
Step 1: Install Google Analytics.
Step 2: Set up Google Webmaster Tools.
Step 3: Link Google Webmaster Tools with your Google Analytics account. This will allow you to gain more insight into how users are finding your site organically.
Step 4: Create a robots.txt file and upload it to the root directory of your website.
Step 5: Create a sitemap.xml file and then upload that to the root directory of your website.
Step 6: Submit the completed map to Google Webmaster Tools for indexing.
Set Out Some Bait: Keyword Research
Step 1: Write out a basic summary of your products and/or services.
Step 2: Highlight the keywords and the key phrases within those descriptions.
Step 3: Take that list of words and create as many combinations of key phrases as you possibly can.
Step 4: Find some additional ideas by doing some keyword research with Google Keyword Planner. This will let you “Search for keyword and ad group ideas.”
Step 5: Satisfied with your list? Great! Input all of those keywords into the Keyword Planner that you just used in order to “See how they perform.”
Step 6: Narrow down your list by picking out the key phrases that have the largest volume with the lowest costs per click. This means there will be more people looking for those, but with less competition. These will serve as your “Target Keywords.”
Step 7: Create categories and/or pages for your website with these Target Keywords as titles. If you have a great deal of them, and worry your page will look cluttered, use the remainder in an a blog post, or series of blog posts.
Step 1: Create a unique meta description for each of those pages/tabs, making sure to incorporate one or more relevant Target Keywords. Ideally, this should be under 155 characters.
Step 2: Put a Target Keyword into the URL of each page/tab.
Step 3: Each page should have headers that use the relevant Target Keywords.
Step 4: When you link to a page from somewhere else on the website, use one of the Target Keywords assigned to the page you are linking to. This will be part of your anchor text.
Step 5: Do you have eye-catching images? Make sure they are optimized, too! Use ALT tags with related Target Keywords in order to let search engines make sense of what you are showing to your users.
Quality Over Quantity: Content
Step 1: While search engines do bring in your traffic, your content should be valuable enough to keep them there. Ensure that each page of your site has at least 300 – 400 words of unique content. This means it cannot be found anywhere else on your site or someone else’s.
Step 2: Create a blog on your domain, and publish a quality post as often as you can. A couple times per month is good, and then increase from there. Keep your Target Keywords in mind as you write, but make sure to focus on creating quality content. Create something they not only want to read, but also that it’s something they needto read.
Step 3: Link to influencers in your niche, and closely follow their online content until you are able to reach out and connect with them.
Step 4: Share your content regularly across social media, and be sure to include backlinks to your site whenever possible.
Step 5: Take advantage of available listings on affiliate directories, community boards, organization directories, and other associations for your niche and/or industry.
As previously mentioned, some of these SEO techniques do take some time to complete. However, the time spent on them will definitely pay off in the end. Optimize your site, and watch your traffic grow!
